 Maintenance

Maintenance on an RV can fall into two different categories. Coach and chassis

Coach repairs
Coach repairs are generally done by an RV repair facility (Go West Parts/Service Department). The most common of attention paid the coach is maintenance to prevent leakage. Always use correct sealing products made for RVs. Home repair materials do not have necessary properties for weather and flex conditions that an RV requires. The second most common maintenance demand for the coach is appliances. Fridge, stove, water and heat. All of these systems should be inspected annually to prevent water or gas leakage and to avoid big repair bills later as well as proper winterizing of the unit to prevent freezing damage.

Chassis
The second kind of maintenance pertains to the chassis. If your unit is a tow able, your RV shop can perform inspections and maintenance repairs to these. Bearings, brakes and jacks etc. should be checked annually as well.

If your RV is motorized, you should have regular servicing done by a qualified auto shop the same as a car or truck. Check with your RV shop for referrals to a good shop they know or ask around. Always confirm your shop of choice can accommodate your RV as larger units require larger shop equipment to repair. If the unit is new, it will have a new vehicle warranty as most cars and trucks have and should be taken to a dealer for the manufacturer of the chassis.

More ways to maintain your RV

  • Always keep your RV clean.
  • Apply a little auto wax to all surfaces
  • Paint, fiberglass chrome and stripes will all stay new looking.
  • Use proper treatment products on RVs with rubber roofs.
  • Always park it on solid, dry ground when you store your RV.
  • If you cover the unit with a plastic tarp make sure you secure it well so the wind doesn’t take it and leave an air gap between the roof and tarp for air circulation other wise condensation will be created and do more damage than the rain and snow could.
